A pre-departure visit to the destination country helps ensure a smooth and well-planned move. Arrange appointments in advance with key people, such as real estate agents, destination companies, school officials, and perhaps a colleague from your new office. If your company is helping you move, it may arrange for an experienced destination company to assist you in your search for a home.
As soon as you locate a home, initiate your requests for telephone and utility services; in many countries installation of these services can require weeks or even months.
When you are reviewing possible homes, be sure to note the following:
- Are major appliances included?
- What type of electrical current and style of plug are used?
- What is the home's proximity to the office, schools, and other places in which you and your family expect to spend time regularly?
- What is the availability and proximity of public transportation?
- Are incidentals (such as light fixtures, locks, and other items you consider standard) either in place in the home or available for purchase in the local area?
- Is security and lighting acceptable?
